health care. The surveyors consulted with the management staff at Culpeper Memorial and reviewed virtually every area of operation. After the on-site visit, the surveyors shared their findings with management and sent a report to the commission for review and analysis.

After this review, recommends- i tions were submitted for final consideration to the Accreditation; Committee of the commission’s governing body, the Board of Commissioners. This committee, which is composed of active, practicing health-care professionals, awarded Culpeper Memorial Hospital accred-. itation.

Culpeper Memorial Hospital joins the commission in the belief that health-care professionals should take the responsibility for evaluating and improving the quality of health care they provide. The com-, mission assists CMH through con-' sultation, education and evaluation" in achieving this goal.

The Joint Commission is a notfor-profit organization created by and composed of health-care professionals. The commission promotes' high-quality care by working with; leaders of the health-care field to de-; velop standards, by applying the; standards during on-site surveys; and by granting accreditation to facilities, programs and organizations! that meet the intent of the stan-C dards.

The Joint Commission is govemed by a board of commissioners whose members are appointed by the American College of Surgeons, American College of Physicians, American Dental Association and the American Medical Association. A public member is appointed by the Board of Commissioners to represent consumer concerns.
