In a joint resolution passed by the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, Nov. 8-14, 1987, has been declared National Food Bank Week. Sen. Alan Dixon (D-Ill.) and Rep. Mickey Leland (D.-Texas), chairman of the House Select Committee on Hunger, sponsored the resolution.
The commemoration honors the efforts of Food Banks such as the Thomas Jefferson Area Food Bank in Charlottesville, which serves churches in the city of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Rappahannock, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Greene, Madison, Nelson and Orange.
“Many people this year have been hard hit economically,” said Phil Grasty, executive director of the Food Bank Network. “We anticipate that the more than 700 charities we serve will be asking us for more food in the weeks to come. We’re hoping that the publicity surrounding National Food Bank Week will help generate more donations.”
