The designation of National Food Bank Week coincides with the winter holiday season. The resolution reads, in part: “The upcoming Thanksgiving season is a time not only to count one’s own blessings, but to support those who are extending a helping hand to their fellow Americans.”

Thomas Jefferson Area Food Bank, managed by Horace Sandridge, is a member of Second Harvest, the national Food Bank Network. Last year, Second Harvest distributed 352 million pounds of nutritious surplus food to hungry Americans through its 200 local Food Banks. Second Harvest distributed $162 worth of food for every dollar expended. A private, nonprofit organization, Second Harvest receives no government funding and is entirely supported by private donations.
