“I think this should be debated in public,” insisted Mr. Miller. “I don’t want to recommend a $42 million tax increase.”
“Can we give you an answer next month?” chairman Hubert Gilkey asked Ms. Gorman.
Repeating that the $42 million spoken to in the resolution comes from surplus on hand and not new taxes, she said the board’s endorsement does not have to come immediately but rather in time to present to the Governor and the General Assembly in J anuary.
“I don’t think we can do that,” Mr. Miller said. “I don’t think well hear the debate on this until the General Assembly meets.”
“I’m hesitant, too,” added Mr. Lane, calling for the state’s surplus to be returned to the taxpayers.
By consensus, the board tabled the resolution.
