The Blue Ridge Mountains have long attracted artists and artisans seeking inspiration in the gentle .beauty of these oldest of the earth’s mountains. This year, as Old Rag, Stoney Man, and Oventop dress for spring in new iridescent green and the bold white bursts of mountain laurel, the artists and crafts people who have found their muse in the mountains and claimed the countryside as home will join others coming from up and down the east coast at the fourth annual Festival of American Craft in Sperryville.
The 1989 festival will be held May 28 and 29 at Oldway Craft Village in the very shadow of Woodward Mountain, within hollering distance of Shenandoah National Park and the Skyline Drive.
Oldway is Virginia's first and only “industrial park for art,” as founder and owner Eric Kvarnes terms it. And he sees its continuing development in shopping mall terms: his Molten Media Glassworks is the Woodward & Lothrop equivalent and porcelain sculptor Maggie Rogers’ shop and showroom is Oldway’s Hecht Company.
