carpentry part to build saleable buildings to partially fund the other areas of instruction. The minimum bid to buy the buildings reflects the cost of materials and is non-profit to the school or students. “The immense value of skills learned and self-esteem generated in these students makes the hassle of building worth while” was Mr. Vickers’ justification.
While the morning class, including Tonya Aylor, Phillip Pullen, Kyle Thompson, Ray Withrow, and Kevin Daymude, built the shed with the tin roof, no one student did most of the work. Tonya said, “It was a lot of fun building the shed and I learned a lot.” Each student was foreman for one stage of the construction. This model has been very well received by past buyers because of the wide double doors. A new feature this year includes a treaded door stop.
The afternoon class, including Chucky Baker, Tony Huff, Lionel Bradford, Mike Campbell, Lynn McFarland, Wesley Cooke, and Joe Rooker, built the other shed. Both classes were able to experience the different building techniques of the two models and have a competition as to which had the better budding.
