Mr. Kvames’ background gives no clue that he would end up an itinerant glass blower traveling the Mid-Atlantic craft show circuit with his portable half-ton glass furnace. His father, Dr. Robert Gordon Kvames, was a prominent Washington, D.C., psychiatrist and the president of the Washington School of Psychiatry. Eric grew up in affluence— albeit with “ a lot of wacked out people around”—in Chevy Chase, Md.

In 1969, his father invested in a now-defunct ski venture in Rappahannock County’s rolling and too-often-snowless mountains. And since in 1969 land still could be found for $50 an acre, he also bought 156 acres in the next hollow over. The old farmhouse on the property overlooked a pond with spring feeders that kept the water cool and inviting even in August. A dock perfect for cannonballing provided easy water access that avoided a walk through the squishy mud of the shallows.
