Taking one down from a shelf, Mr. Tucker points out the intricate mechanisms in the back: the bellows which make the bird sing, and the wheels which control the other figures. All must be precisely synchronized for the clock to work right, and to check that the whole thing has to be reassembled.
And if it doesn’t work, taken apart again.
“They are the most frustrating," he says, but the tone of his voice adds the unspoken thought that he still finds them a challenge.
What, after 10 years, keeps Mr. Tucker in his shop until late at night, and back again early the next morning?
“I just really love it,” he says. “In 10 years, I’ve learned a lot about clocks — and a lot about people.”
