From Bristol to the beach and from the Beltway to Bassett, Virginians will be heading for the highways for the Memorial Day weekend. The first holiday weekend of the season begins Friday, May 27, and extends through Monday, May 30. Travelers can expect typical holiday weekend traffic.
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) officials say there are a number of construction sites on Virginia’s interstate highway system that might cause slowdowns as the holiday traffic hits its peak. However, VDOT Director of Operations David R. Gehr says construction crews at these sites will cease work at noon on Friday to help facilitate the traffic flow. Work will resume Tuesday.
Also, there are numerous construction areas that have barriers closing the shoulders of the roadway even though all the lanes are open. These areas, usually made necessary by construction of parallel lanes, require extra caution on the part of the motorist. One such area is between Richmond and Petersburg where
