I remembered and paid tribute to them, the men who didn’t return with me from the jungles of Southeast Asia.

So many names etched in stone. They began to blur as I slowly rolled my wheelchair through the cemetery. But, as I moved, my sorrow began to ease. In its place, a kind of serenity and a deep feeling of pride settled on me.

I’m proud of each and every one of the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in defense of this great country in our many wars. Proud not only of those who died during time of war, but especially proud of those who died in recent undeclared hostilities.

More than 300 have died since the end of the Vietnam War. They died in Beirut, Grenada, the Persian Gulf, Central America.
