AFTER CORRESPONDING with their peers at Byrd Primary School in Goochland, Rappahannock Elementary first and second graders meet their pen pals at a picnic in Charlottesville. Mclntire Park was the setting for lunch and an afternoon of games. The pen pal project was begun “to develop new friendships and to practice the students’ writing skills—and for fun,” said one of the chaperones. The students also exchanged handmade friendship necklaces. The trip was made possible by the parents who volunteered to provide transportation and supervision, she added.
