‘Shock of the New’ at Gay Si. Theatre
The first in a series of eight films about art history from 1863 to 1937 will begin at the Gay St. Theatre in Washington, Virginia on Monday, June 6 at 8 p.m. The first film is entitled “The Mechanical Paradise.” Narrator Robert Hughes takes a look at how scientific inventions around the turn of the century like the camera, motion pictures and the discovery of radium affected artists, with social attention to Picasso, Braque, Leger and Duchamp. There will be an informal discussion after the movie led by Denise Horton. Admission is free, though a $1 donation is requested. The series, which is funded by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, will be every Monday at 8 p.m. except the week of July Fourth, when the film will be shown Wednesday, July 6.
Coffeehouse lakes summer break
Citing sparse attendance during the summer, the Middle St. Coffeehouse sponsors are taking a summer break. The coffeehouse will resume in the fall — watch this space for announcements.
