Each year people from all over the world come to walk the Appalachian Trail. Some for a day, some a weekend or longer. A few walk the entire route, from Maine to Georgia.

The Appalachian Trail is America’s first national scenic trail and one of the longest marked footpaths in the world. It winds 2,000 miles through 14 states, eight national forests and six national parks.

Primarily a backpacker’s trail, the Appalachian Trail follows the ridgelines of the mountains of the East. It skirts cascading mountain streams, sparkling lakes, climbs rocky alpine slopes, traverses stretches of primitive back-country and passes over rural roads and agricultural lands.

Part of the trail is easily accessible from parts of Northern Virginia. You might pick up the trail at Harper’s Ferry and follow it for as far as you wish as it winds its way to Roanoke.
