ment, he said, despite the fact that neither the town nor the highway department would have any need to widen the road at that point.
“He's ready to dedicate the rightof-way." Mr. Wickens said, “although there would be no purpose served by it."
Mr. McCarthy added, “the highway department doesn’t want it either ... If you dedicate it, they will take it - but they won't use it."
Mr. Wickens, the planning commission’s chairman, told Rev. Scott that the commission intends to revise the ordinance by late summer or fall, and will submit it to the town council for passage. “There will be a way out then, but we can’t do it now," he added.
"The ordinance requires a dedication,” Mr. Reynolds said again. He said that the recordation of the subdivision plat would serve as the transfer of the dedicated property to the town, rather than to the highway department.
He suggested that one solution to the impasse would be for the town to deed the strip back to the owner once the ordinance is revised. Then, a new plat could be filed without the dedication, which would vacate that restriction and move the boundary back to its present spot at the center of Piedmont Ave.
