• Take cool baths or showers, with the water temperature around 75 degrees, since cool water removes extra body heat 25 times faster than cool air;
• Drink water often, even when they don’t feel thirsty;
• Slow down, because physical activity produces more heat;
• Avoid hot foods, heavy meals and alcohol, and try cooking meals in the oven during a cooler part of the day.
Serious signs of heat stress include dizziness, rapid heartbeat, diarrhea, chest pains, throbbing headache, nausea, dry skin (no sweating), great weakness, mental changes, breathing problems and cramps. As heat stress can be fatal, people should notify their doctors or seek medical help if they experience any of the symptoms.
The National Center for Health Statistics reports that heat waves claim more lives nationally than any other natural disaster, such as floods, tornadoes, earthquakes and hurricanes.
