They will sponsor an interdisciplinary collaborative workshop on the art of the story June 25-30 at the Sevenoaks Pathwork Center in Madison County.
The Golden Key is an ensemble of professional artists who transform folk tales into theatre. As contemporary storytellers and traveling minstrels, these artists bring together their music, mime, dance, masks, sculture, and story to create a rare coupling of traditional folklore with the best in modern theatre.
The Golden Key has performed at The Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts, and The National Theatre. They have earned accolades from critics, including a reviewer for The Washington Post, who wrote: “These grand old tales have never been told better . . .Live music from harp, synthesizer, flute, dulcimer, and drums accompany the intense action. . .creating a joyous theatre that speaks to the human condition making points as valid in the 1980s as they were long ago."
“Storytelling is one of the oldest forms of art, entertainment, oral communication, and healing. In ancient times, myths or epic tales were sung or chanted .— sometimes accompanied by music, sometimes by gesture or dance,” says Ms. Portman.
She explained that The Golden Key’s multidisciplinary approach is really nothing riew. The five-day workshop on “Outf Stories Together, Old and New” is merely a re-introduction to the art of story, “a language central to the creative process of every artist and artistic discipline,” she adds.
•_Led by artists of The Golden Key — Ms. Portman, Bob Read and Paul Reisler from the musical group. Trapezoid, and dancer/actress Denise Read — the participants in the workshop will explore the ways of expressing individual stories and discover how those stories live inside the stories of others.
