The Memorial Day weekend usually ushers in hot and muggy summer weather for Piedmont Virginia and surrounding areas, and local residents must take care to avoid heat stress.

In the late spring and early summer, the sudden arrival of hot weather may be dangerous because the human body is unprepared for the strain of heat, said Gerry Hoak, Potomac Edison’s Safety Administrator.

’Temperatures above 90 degrees can be very dangerous,” Hoak said, “especially when the humidity is high, too. If people feel hot or uncomfortable, they should take steps to avoid heat stress.”

Older Americans are the most vulnerable to heat stress, reports the U.S. Center for Environmental Physiology. To stay cool during the hot and humid days of summer, the center says, people of all ages should:

• Spend as much time as possible in cool places, such as the coolest room in their homes, a shopping mall, library or senior citizens’ center;
