would address the “clear intent/ Mr. Wickens said, of the planning commission to cluster all government offices near the courthouse complex and “would effectively zone government offices out of any zoning district except village services (the classification including and surrounding the courthouse).
The town council requested that the planning commission address that problem after it approved C. E. (Skippy) Giles’ request for a special use permit for office space for the Health Department in what is now the Washington Cash Store on Main St.
Although the sentiment of the council was clear in not wishing to grant the permit, Mr. Giles fulfilled the requirements set forth in the ordinance and the council approved hi§ permit at its April meeting.
However, the members expressed their desire to have the language rewritten. Council member Ray Gooch said of the proposed change, “It should be very clear that we do not intend to sacrifice the retail space in town to accomodate the growing county government. ”
Mr. Reynolds suggested additions to the definitions section of the ordinance which would clearly define governmental, retail and professional offices, and would prevent any future differences in interpretation between the definitions.
The council will act on the commission’s recommendations at its June meeting. If the council members agree with the amendments, they will probably be set for public hearing at the July 13 meeting.
