Hiking the trail is a great adventure. If you should decide to go, you will need some basic information about the trail. Guidebooks and maps are available from the Appalacian Trail Conference, P. O. Box 807, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia 25425-0807.
Another helpful tool is the trail Data Book, updated each year, which lists access points to the trail and the location and distances between shelters, post offices, supply points, water sources and lodging.
Books giving detailed information on proper equipment and food and other publications of interest are also available from the ATC. They will give you information on matching sections of the trail with your ability, trail markings, weather, clothing, safety, food and water, fires, permits, shelters and hiking clubs.
