Cora Monahan, a third-grade student at Wakefield School, was a regional winner in the Virginia Executive Mansion 175th Anniversary Contest. Her short story was entitled, “Penny, George, and the New Market Battle.”
Cora is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Monahan of Boston, Virginia.
The contest, organized by Jeannie P. Baliles, the Commonwealth’s First Lady, was conceived to encourage students throughout the state to write about the rich and varied history of Virginia.
Every school chose a winner in each of four grade groupings, and the essays were sent to a judging committee composed of the writing directors of Virginia’s universities. Those judges chose the state winners.
