Washington’s Town Council approved a record $78,000 budget at its meeting last week. It includes the first capital improvements funding in the town’s history, as well as a vastly increased amount for administration and services.
The capital improvements fund, which totals $24,000, includes $16,000 earmarked for the upgrade of the town’s water system. That will cover the payment for the loan which the town hopes to secure to fund the water project.
Other items proposed for the capital improvements fund included the purchase of new street lights, new storm drains and rebuilding sidewalks on Main and Gay Sts. Mayor Dean Morehouse noted that the Virginia Department of Transportation will fund some portion of the sidewalk improvements, but that the town must allocate some money to cover its share.
