Support the volunteers
“You never know when you may need them.” The phrase comes from a letter to the editor elsewhere on this page. It refers to the county’s volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel.
The letter was written by a mother whose young child had difficulty breathing last week. Like most emergencies, it came out of the blue, with no warning.
Her plight points out two important facts about life in the county.
First, that the county’s volunteer fire and rescue personnel were there, ready to help, as they are every day. No matter what the weather, or what the hour, they respond as quickly as they can. Many leave their jobs, if necessary, to respond to an emergency. TTiey’re not paid for what they do, or for the hours of training they take. They’re not reimbursed for the gas they use, or the uniforms, equipment or supplies they may purchase.
The volunteer fire and rescue companies are able to do the job they do because of the support of the residents of the county — and for that, they are all grateful. For the sake of everyone who lives here, and passes through, we hope that support not only continues but grows — both in donations and in those willing to give their time and energy to help.
