Douglas H. Weaver, a student at Germanna Community College, was selected for inclusion in the Scholastic All-American Collegiate Directory, an annual publication. To be included in the directory, students must achieve a grade-point average of at least 3.30 and be nominated by a faculty member or administrator. Doug was nominated by Dr. Francis S. Tumage, president of Germanna Community College.
He is the son of Virginius and Eloise Weaver and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Audie Weaver of Slate Mills. His maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Johnson of Alexandria.
Karen Marie Kerns, a student at Manassas Park High School, was named a United States National Award winner by the academy.
She was nominated by John Strange, one of her teachers, for her outstanding achievements in science.
According to an academy spokesman, less than 10 percent of all American high school students are recognized by the academy. They are included in the USAA’s Official Yearbook, published annually.
Miss Kerns is the daughter of Richard and Donna Kerns of Manassas Park, and the granddaughter of Mrs. Edna L. Perry of Washington.
“Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than ever before in American history,” said USAA Executive Director Dr' George Stevens. “Certainly USAA award winners should be congratu7 lated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement.”
The criteria for selection by the academy are academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, dependability and the recommendation of a teacher or administrator.
