“Other benefits are an improvement of infiltration into the soil; an increase in organic matter content of the soil; enabling the farmer to split the application of fertilizer; helping to control weeds, insects, and diseases; and providing more flexibility to maintain a good rotational system which allows the farmer to try new methods or crops on a few strips without changing the entire system.”
Mr. Latham used the Chesapeake Bay Cost Share Program which paid $30 per acre to establish his strip system. A 75 percent add-on component costshare is also available for the removal of obstructions in the field and subsurface drainage where needed to make cross-slope farming possible.
