“You know me — you know what I stand for — the right to life, the right to work, the right to own a gun, the right to economic opportunity, the right to equal justice under the law, and a color-blind society.

“You know that I am a hard liner against Communism and will be the freedom fighters’ candidate. ..

“You know that I am 100 percent against secularism, racism, and atheism and will vote for prayer in the schools and relentlessly fight drugs, crime and corruption.”

• Because he is a dynamic, inspiring and vigorous speaker, in our opinion the candidate best fitted: first, to accomplish what most political experts consider a near-impossibility, the defeat of former Gov. Charles Robb, his better-known and campaign fund-wealthy opponent in November; second, best fitted to serve the long-term interests of Virginia’s residents and America’s citizens in the Senate.

• Because we knew him best of the three (originally four) candidates and increasingly liked what we saw. True, there is much to admire in the others, newcomers that they are. But many delegates had observed Dr. Dawkins’ 1985 campaign for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor of Virginia. The attempt failed, but in the process he showed what he could do, gaining exposure, earning respect.

By helping select Maurice Dawkins, Rappahannock County’s delegates present the voters with a candidate whose beliefs and values are shared by most Virginians, whose abilities promise a dynamic and powerful campaign to convince voters of that fact, and whose presence in the U.S. Senate will make us all proud he was our choice.
