To further that relationship, Mr. Banes has founded the AustrakanAmerican Friendship Association, and he extols that friendship everywhere he goes. He passes out pins in the shape of the Australian continent. stickers with two hands shaking. one arm emblazoned with the American flag, the other with the Australian colors, autographed photos of a display in his East Melbourne home of the flags of the two countries along with a photograph of himself in uniform during the w’ar.
“I'd heard of southern hospitality for years - and I had to come and experience it.” Mr. Pierson met Tex through an Australian record collector with whom he trades. ‘This is the third time I’ve been here.” Tex recalled a yodeling contest with a shopper in the Sperryville Emporium during a visit there. “Afterward she said ‘I enjoyed it - that was lovely.’ . . .I’m always ready to create a bit of fun along the way.”
Yodeling is a part of the original country (hillbilly) style popularized by Jimmy Rogers and others. “I first heard Jimmy Rogers yodel on a ‘wireless’ back in the 1930s when I was milking cows on a farm. In 1985 I performed an Australian song at the Carter fold; and when I started yodeling, it brought down the house.”
