U.S. Senator Paul Trible, last week introduced the Freedom Fighters’ Assistance Act of 1988, which authorizes economic and military assistance to anti-communist national movements that respect human rights. The measure also makes it more difficult for any president to give assistance to communist governments.
In a statement to the Senate, Sen. Trible said, “Our purpose is to ensure that the Reagan Doctrine lives on. America must stand with those people who are risking their lives throughout the world - from Afghanistan to Angola to Nicaragua - to defy Marxist aggression and to secure basic human rights. Our law should reflect what President Reagan has said to the world’s freedom fighters: ‘America will support with moral and material assistance your right not just to fight and die for freedom, but to fight and win freedom’.”
