vehicles. We urge anyone willing to undertake any of those tasks to contact their local department. We’re sure they would be happy to hear from you.

The second fact is the importance for as many people as possible to be trained in basic first aid, particularly cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Luckily, that wasn’t •" pessary last week, but it’s not always the case.

And, even with the quickest response time possible, there are places in the county which rescue personnel can’t reach in the four to six minutes which mean the difference between life and death to a person in cardiac arrest. A neighbor or family member trained in CPR can keep the victim alive until more help and equipment arrives.

To some people from more urban areas, where fire and rescue are paid services, our volunteer system must seem antiquated and insufficient.

But thanks to the community spirit of our volunteers, backed by residents who are willing to become involved in support of their efforts, it works well. There’s a young child in Flint Hill, and her family, who will happily testify to that.

We hope that community spirit will continue, and that more people will realize the satisfaction which comes from helping their neighbors. The volunteers will tell you that when you feel that satisfaction, there’s no other reimbursement necessary.
