Folks in Rappahannock will have at least six locations where they can try to hit the jackpot when the Virginia Lottery begins selling tickets fjys fall.
According to Bill Leonard, acting supervisor of the lottery’s licensing department, six businesses have received first phase approval as ticket vendors to date, giving the county art early match for the one ticket outlet per 1,000 population which the department hopes to achieve statewide.
It’s not hard for a business to qualify as a ticket outlet. It must simply be an ongoing commercial activity accessible to the public with room to sell lottery tickets and the means of ensuring security for those tickets.
Any type of business can become a ticket seller. “We prefer it to be a retail-type operation,” said Mr. Leonard. He added, however, that the Attorney General’s office has ruled service clubs, fraternal orders, even municipal governments could qilalify. “But you can’t open a business just to sell lottery tickets. You can’t get a license to set up a booth to sell tickets in a parking lot or a mall. You have to be in some other already-established business.”
As of last Friday, 1,678 applications had been filed to sell lottery tickets at 3,489 locations, 1,232 applicants and 2,058 locations have been given first-phase approval and 1,012 have passed site evaluations. “We hope to have 6,000 outlets approved and ready to go by the time ticket sales begin,” Mr. Leonard said.
