The convention opened Friday afternoon, une 10. That afternoon session was occupied fwith greetings and organizational work. Roanoke
city and Republican Party officials welcomed the approximately 5,000 delegates, ^temporary and permanent convention officers g^ere elected, and reports submitted by the Credentials, Nominations, Resolutions and Rules ^Committees were reviewed and approved. * The final item and highlight of the first day’s greeting was a rousing speech by Republican ^Congressman Donald E. (Buzz) Lukens of Ohio.
Friday evening the second annual John Dal£ton Awards Dinner, honoring the late Governor ■and his service to the state and party, was held at the Civic Center. An inspirational and moving "tribute to Gov. Dalton came from former Gov. Mills Godwin. Senators Warner and Trib-le spoke, as did other prominent Virginians. The three candidates for the U.S. Senate nomination were introduced.
The highlight of the evening was a speech by former Massachusetts Gov. Ed King, the man *who served in that office between present Gov. Dukakis’ first and second terms. Mr. King, a Democrat during this term as governor who became a Republican several years ago, gave the delegates and other guests some generally unknown blit pertinent facts about Dukakis’ performance in office.
