Church to honor

teacher’s retire ment

The First Baptist Church, Washington will host a retirement celebration to honor former educator Mrs. Dorothy Butler on Sunday, July 17 at 6 p.m. at the church. Long-time friend and colleague Mrs. Lillian Sloane will be guest speaker for the evening. The program will also feature music by the Slaughter family of Culpeper and David Clanagan of Washington. All former students of Mrs. Butler are encouraged to attend. The evening is being sponsored by the Dealing Gospel Chorus.

Flint Hill carnival planned

Flint Hill firemen’s carnival will be held August 3-6. Anyone wishing to participate in the parade, which will be held on Thursday, August 4 at 6:30 p.m. is urged to contact Moe Walker at 675-3441, evenings.

‘Hope and Glory’

The movie “Hope and Glory” will be playing at the Gay Street Theater on Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. each evening. John Boorman, who made “Deliverance,” “Exealibur” and “The Emerald Forest,” hit his peak here. The story is a romantic reminiscence about his childhood and the London Blitz, which happened to coincide. Boorman’s film is a symphonious sweep over Albion, sounding themes, introducing new ones, returning to old ones — and there’s never a dull moment. There were excellent performances from Sarah Miles and Sebastian Rice-Edwards as the young boy, Bill. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.

Anniversary celebration

The Macedonia Baptist Church will be celebrating its 123rd church anniversary on Sunday, July 17. Rev. James A. Price will deliver the morning sermon. At 3 p.m. Rev. Lloyd A. Roberts, choir and congregation of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Alexandria will be the guest speaker. Lunch will be served after the morning service. Everyone is welcome. Rev. James A. Price is pastor.
