pet owners select their pet food on “emotion, promotion, and their own likes and dislikes.

“The marketing and promotion of pet food is aimed at the tastes of the owner, not necessarily at what the animal wants or needs,” Mr. Roberts said.

Pet foods generally fall into one of four categories: dry food, semimoist, canned and “treats.” Sales Agues show that 81 percent of the dog food and 63 percent of the cat food purchased is of the dry variety.

The so-called “dry” food contains between 6 and 10 percent water, while semi-moist has between 25 and 40 percent, and canned pet food runs between 68 and 78 percent.

The pet food companies place a lot of emphasis in their advertising on the palatability of the product.
