Space still a priority
This week the space shuttle Discovery, which will fly the first shuttle mission since the Challenger tragedy, was moved to its launch pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida in preparation for its scheduled takeoff in September.
While there have been many setbacks in the rebuilding of our space program since the Challenger disaster in 1986, a strong space program is critical to our nation if we are to realize our potential for private commercial development and our scientific understanding of space.
I recently became an original cosponsor of legislation in the House of Representatives to continue an aggressive space program which combines manned and unmanned exploration of the universe. This requires the restoration of the space shuttle to safe, operational flight status and recognizes that the timely development, assembly and operation of a permanently manned space
