Kt. 211 is not a possibility because the road is an arterial which is designed for heavy truck usage."
Are our Supervisors and Planning Commissioners aware of V DOT’s plan to encourage increased, non-local use of Rt. 211 by cars as well as trucks?
What impact will this have on other major routes in the county, such as Rts. 522 and 231?
Does this widening tie into the new truck port in Front Royal and its plans of stimulating trucking business within a 200-mile radius?
VDOT is expecting traffic to nearly double on Rt. 211 by the year 2011. What impact would such traffic have on this county’s vision of its purpose, as expressed in our zoning ordinance, as remaining primarily rural and agricultural in nature?
As has been stressed time and again, there are those in the county who belieVe that the proposed duallaning (even if it is somehow permanently stopped at Sperryville, which seems most unlikely) is not in keeping with our county’s stated intention of remaining fundamentally agricultural.
There are many ways the highway can be improved short of duallaning (such as widening shoulders and adding turn-off lanes). It could well be in the next 20 or 30 years that farmland around big cities will become increasingly precious; that the projected transportation growth will not materialize on account of changing economic and environmental conditions; and that the treasures we already cherish in Rappahannock will be more valuable, and scarce, than ever.
Please think deeply about these issues and come to the public hearing on the matter on Thursday, July 21 at 7 p.m. at the elementary school.
