mum wage workers were living below the poverty line. An additional 22 percent hovered just above it.
Sadly the majority of these workers are eligible for some type of government assistance: welfare, medicaid or food stamps. In other words, they are tax users that perpetuate government deficits. But they can’t help that. They are the victims of employers who are paying poverty wages. Those same employers are the ones who are forcing taxpayers to help poor workers make ends meet through even higher social welfare subsidies. Now that’s corporate welfare!
Adjusting the minimum wage is good economic and social policy. If enacted into law, H.R. 1834 will remove thousands of full-time workers from the public assistance rolls, give low-wage workers a way out of poverty, and ease the plight of the working poor for whom the American dream in 1988 has become a nightmare.
