Speculation that the governors of Maryland and Virginia have agreed on a river crossing for a Western Bypass of Washington, D.C. is untrue, according to Neil Pederson, director of the Office of Planning and Preliminary Engineering for the Maryland State Highway Administration.
That rumor drew more attention than did the presentations from the podium at last Thursday’s meeting of the Washington Bypass Study Interagency Task Force. During breaks in the day-long session held at George Mason University in Fairfax, environmentalists, government officials, and staff from Loudoun, Fauquier, and Montgomery counties congregated at the displays in the rear of the room to examine the “mapping products” showing clusters of big red dots indicating “detailed study areas” - read interchanges - at Warrenton, Gainesville, Gilbert’s Comer, Leesburg, and Point of Rocks.
