It is important that Rappahannock residents be aware of very significant recent developments regarding the proposed dual-laning of Rt. 211 between Washington and Sperryville.
1) Commissioner Ray Pethtel of the Virginia Transportation Board has written a prominent Virginia politician indicating that the proposed widening of the highway to Sperryville will be followed at a later time by a widening of the section from Sperryville to the climbing lane up to the Park.
He states: “This section of Route 211 is a part of the State's arterial network. As such, it is intended to complement and supplement the interstate system to form the backbone for highway transportation in Virginia. This corridor has been completed to a multi-lane facility with the exception of the 8-mile section from Washington to the climbing lane west of Sperryville, and a short section in the town of New Market.”
2) VDOT’s “environmental assessment” of the impact of the proposed widening also makes it very clear that VDOT envisions Route 211 as a major artery, supplementing the interstate highway system. It is being “designed to carry significant volumes of traffic.”
3) The environmental assessment also stresses that it is VDOT’s intention to facilitate truck traffic on Rt. 211.
The document states: “Truck traffic is estimated at 9 percent on Route 211 .. . Widening the road will provide safer conditions for the mix of cars and trucks on the improved section . . . Improving the turning radius from Rt. 522 onto Rt. 211 will allow trucks easier access to Route 211.”
