“Palatability,” Mr. Roberts said, “is important but it does not always have a direct correlation to the quality of the ingredients. Premimum brands emphasize optimal nutrition, which is what should interest responsible pet owners.”
Quality diets, he explained, are made from quality ingredients, are balanced, and provide good palatability with low volume stool production.
An animal’s diet should be based on age, weight, and its activity. Growth, pregnancy, and high levels of exercise place more demands on the animal and its diet.
Generic or private label brands tend to be of lower quality while the premium brands and special diets generally are of the best quality, he said.
“Feeding more of a poor diet is not a satisfactory solution to supplying proper nutrition for any animal,” Mr. Roberts concluded.
