This apparent focus on the Route 15 corridor from Gainesville north was seen as evidence that Virginia Governor Gerald L. Baliles has persuaded his Maryland counterpart, William Donald Schaefer, to accept a western route with a crossing at Point of Rocks into Frederick County in return for Virginia’s support for a new bridge near Dumfries in Prince William.
“No such deal. . . The only deal that’s been cut was for the study,” said Mr. Pederson, referring to the work by Bellomo-McGee, Inc. to evaluate four possibilities for a bypass of the Washington metropolitan area: build it going east along the Route 301 corridor in Maryland; build it going west from Interstate 95 at Fredericksburg through Prince William, Fauquier, and Loudoun with a new Potomac River crossing above the District; build it going both ways; or don’t build it at all.
