Troopers issued a total of 6,110 summonses and/or arrests during the holiday period which extended from 6 p.m., Friday, July 1 through midnight, Monday, July 4. The summonses included 4,451 for speeding, 578 for reckless driving, and 203 for driving drunk. They also issued summonses for 283 violations of Virginia’s safety belt law and 16 for child restraint violations.
Col. Suthard noted that troopers issued 2,109 summonses to motorists exceeding the new 65 miles per hour speed limit on rural interstate highways. “However,” he added, “there were no fatal crashes on our interstate highways during the July 4th weekend.
“Because of the change in speed limits — 65 mph for passenger vehicles, motorcycles, pickup and panel trucks and 55 mph for larger trucks — we plan to continue having as many troopers as we can make available on the rural interstate highways for the next several weeks. With the increase in speed, it is especially critical that motorists obey the speed limits,” Col. Suthard added.
