Benefit bake sale Lillian Ay lor and Charlotte Freeman will be sponsoring a bake sale at the 4th of July celebration to benefit the Promise Land Baptist Church.
Drawing, painting classes Middle Street Gallery will hold classes for young artists on Tuesday and Thursday mornings starting July 11 through July 20. Laurie Marshall is the instructor. Painting and drawing will be offered to 5 to 10 year olds from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The cost is $20. Students may take an individual class for $5. There is financial aid. All materials will be provided. Painting in acrylics and oils for 11 to 17 year-olds will take place from 10:15 to 12:30. The cost is $25 or $7 per individual class. Most materials will be provided and there is financial aid available. Classes will be held at the Recreation Center outside of Washington. Call 6753267 to register.
Ruritan beef barbecue The 28th annual Amissville Ruritan Beef Barbecue is set for Saturday, July 8, frpm 4 to 8 p.m. at the fire house. Cost of the complete meal of slow-cooked beef barbecue over hot stones for 24 hours , cole slaw’, baked beans, rolls, drink, pie and cake, is $8 for adults and $4 for children. 'Rain Man' The movie Rain Man will be playing at the Gay Street Theater on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, July 2, 3, and 4 at 8 p.m. Two of Hollywood’s most gifted and popular stars, Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, are united with Barry Levinson for one of the most eagerly anticipated movies of 1988. Cruise gives an outstanding performance as a master manipulator in search of his one big chance to strike it rich. Academy Award-winner Hoffman is in top form as Cruise’s older brother, a childlike autistic savant who has just inherited the family fortune. Rapp. Convalesce booth Be sure to stop on July 4 at Rappahannock Convalesce Aids’ booth. There will be homemade ham biscuits, cakes, cookies, and popcorn. Buy a raffle ticket and win a prize like the framed painting by Eloise Coates on exhibit at the Rappahannock Bank; a dinner for two at The Corner Post; a disco art mantle clock or a ceramic charm. Child Development course The Rappahannock Education Action Project (REAP) is offering a three-credit Child Development course through Lord Fairfax Community college this summer. The class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning July 6 at the Child Care and Learning Center. Dr. Oran Stewart of Shenandoah College will be the instructor. Tuition is $80. Baseball Trophy Day set The Amissville Baseball League will hold a picnic and “Trophy Day”, on July 23. Awards will be presented as well as a drawing for an autographed Redskins’ football donated by Rick Hunt Ford and a Redskins’ jacket donated by Rankins’ Sporting Goods. Winners need not be present. The kids are now selling tickets for $1; contest will last until July 23.
Gallery features artists The School House Gallery located in Flint Hill will feature drawings and watercolors by Dan Louis and Scott Robinson, Sculptures by Claudia M,cCue and furniture by Cabinetmaker Peter Kramer from June 30 - July 28. Rappahannock Lions Club The Rappahannock Lions Club, as in past its Fourth of July festivals in Washington will display some of its wares, including light bulbs hand-packed by the blind, brooms made by the blind, locally produced honey, cold cider, cold water melon, and apple butter made and packed by the Lions Club. The Lions Club also collects used eye glasses and hearing aids which are recycled for use in their sight and hearing pro jects. A receptacle will be provided at the booth on July 4 for deposit ol these items.
