State Sen. Joseph Renedetti faces the most formidable task of the six Democratic and Republican nominees for statewide office this year.
Sen. Renedetti, a Richmond lawyer, is the Republican candidate opposing incumbent Democratic attorney-general Mary Sue Terry.
Certainly, no one is writing Renedetti off yet, particularly given Doug Wilder's remarkable 19<S5 win for lieutenant-governor when he was a decided underdog, and also given Marshall Coleman's recent longshot win in the Republican primary.
Rut Renedetti faces in Ms. Terry the person who got more votes than anybody in the statewide election four years ago and who has increased her name recognition even more since then.
Though she got off to a rocky start as the state’s chief legal officer during the last three years, she has staked out a claim on many consumer issues and has consistently called for tougher measures to combat drug use and abuse and crime.
Ms. Terry opted not to run for Governor this year, as many thought she would, so that she wouldn’t have to confront Wilder head-on for the nomination. If she wins re-election, she will probably seek the governorship in 191C.
With lots of political contacts and the help of such legendary money raisers as Alson Smith, Ms. Terry already has considerable cash in the campaign treasury, and the coffers will undoubtedly continue to grow.
Renedetti’s dilemma is that nobody can win a statewide campaign these days without spending loads of money; and one cannot raise loads of money unless those making the contributions believe the candidate has some chance of success.
If the early polls show a huge lead for Ms. Terry, as may be the case, Renedetti s fund raising problems will be compounded. When former Del. William “Ruster” O’Rrien, I the GOT nominee against Ms. Terry in UK), started slipping in the polls, his money sources dried up. ^ Renedetti, a quiet-spoken man who has earned the respect of his fellow legislators, may have to alter his style a bit if he is to stand any chance of victory.
His major job will be to convince voters that his legal operation will be more competent than that of Ms. Terry, and that he will do more to combat the drug scourge.
