The series of photographs of the people and land 1()0 miles outside of Moscow is of particular interest to our rural community. And 1 think Gladkov's experiences and perceptions are of general importance to all Americans.
Goladkov has spent two months in America, photographing in Boston. NY. Philadelphia. DC and Rappahannock. His children could not come, he said, because they must stay like hostages.
Middle Street Gallery .has shown Gladkov's work for three years, including parts of the village series. "Chasnitsy, a Russian Village and its people, is shown in its entirety for the first time in this county during the exhibition.
There is one road into the village of Chasnitsy which is impassable when it rains or snows. About 20 native inhabitants remain out of a community that was 1,500 strong in the 1920's. Three unhappy events were described to Gladkov as the cause of the village's dwindling population: The collectivization of the farms in 1929: A fire which destroyed half the village during World War 11; The politics of Kruschev. After one severe winter when the villagers had killed all their pigs to keep from starving, they were punished by officials for poor agricultural practices.
