There will also be homemade goat cheese and South American hot sausages among other international delicacies. For those with all-American palates, there will also be hot dogs and hamburgers.
Other activities in town during the day will include carriage rides, train rides, pony rides, a dunking booth featuring Washington's Mayor Dean Morehouse and other celebrities.
The evening program, held for the 2Sth year on the grounds of Avon Hall, will feature entertainment for the entire family, Mr. Thomasson said. Around dinner time, events there will begin.
William Carrigan, who along with his late wife Ramona have Served as hosts for the evening program on the lawn of Avon Hall, invites Rappahannock County residents and friends to bring their picnic dinners and blankets and spread their tables on Courthouse Hill, where Mr. Carrigan promises an excellent vantage point for both the evening program and the fireworks.
The theme for this year’s program will be the 240th birthday of the Town of Washington, which was founded in 1749. “Independence Day is an appropriate time to celebrate our .birthday," said Mayor Morehouse, “even though the official date is Aug. 0.” The traditional luminari, a fixture of the program at Avon Hall each year, will be along that theme. But, also true to tradition, the design of the luminari will remain a secret until the candles are actually lit at dusk.
There will be games for children, organized by Child Care and Learning Center Director Rose Ann Sharp, including a tug-of-war, sack races and other events. There will also be a performance by a group of costumed riders and their Arabian horses, which have been a favorite in past years.
As dusk begins to fall, New Liberty will entertain with a concert of bluegrass music. After the performance, a group of community singers will lead the crowd in singing patriotic songs. That will lead to the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner," which the crowd will be asked to participate in, followed by the fireworks’ display, coordinated again this year with classical music.
"Mr. Carrigan. the town and the fire department invite everyone to come and enjoy the show,” Mr. Morehouse said. “But please, for the safety of others, leave your fireworks at home.”
