Mrs. Drake suggested that residents also be aware of vans or trucks which suddenly show up and cruise the area. In some cases in the past, people have seen cages inside these vehicles. In others, the license plates have been partially or completely hidden by mud.
One tip to a vehicle being from outside the area is that it will not display a Rappahannock County tax sticker. These white and red stickers are on the windshield next to the inspection sticker.
"If there are thieves working in the area, they will look around. They will usually scope the area pretty carefully before they move in," Mrs. Drake said.
She said that she will be trained and will offer tattooing for animals within the next few weeks. That process offers owners the ability to place their social security number or other identification as a permanent tattoo on the animal, which aids return if it is stolen. Also, laboratories which use animals for experiments will generally not accept animals
