ning confirmed Warden Pullen’s report. The dogs, held in four runs, ran freely with each other and seemed completely at ease. There was none of the aggressive behavior which would be expected if strange dogs were put in a confined area together. An approach to the cage drew furious tail-wagging from the canines inmates, who seemed eager for attention.
“They know about kennels,” Warden Pullen said, "and they have been in traps before. They wouldn’t bite for that.” He said that, according to reports from residents, the dogs had not strayed far at all from the place they were originally seen. When he drove his truck slowly down the road, “There they were. Dogs came out from everywhere.”
“There's definitely something going on," Warden Pullen said, but he’s been unable to find any clue to where the dogs came from. He has called the animal shelters in surrounding counties, and searched for tattoos on the animals — all to no avail. “I’ve called everybody I know of and come up with nothing," he said, shaking his head.
Mrs. Drake said that the animal control officers in Fauquier County picked up two Shephards last week whose descriptions sounded similar to the ones found in Rappahannock County. She said that she has called the National Humane Society. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the National Pet Registry and Action 81, but can find no reports of missing animals matching these descriptions.
She speculated that it is possible that the dogs were stolen somewhere else and that whoever had them got scared and dumped the dogs. Or, they may have been used by a laboratory for experiments and then released.
A resident reported seeing a white van, covered with mud which obscured its license plate, near Washington on the same day one group of the dogs was found. Mrs. Drake said the general description matches a van which was seen cruising the roads in Fauquier County in the area where dogs disappeared last November.
She added that the league is investigating reports of possible dog thefts in Rappahannock recently.
