A lot of children enjoy climbing, and the farmstead has a lot of places to climb. Sheds, garages, storage buildings and other places tempt youngsters to heights from which falls could cause an injury.
Youngsters enjoy riding all kinds of wheeled-vehicles - bicycles, motorscooters, AT Vs and others. Since there is little other traffic, it is easy for a youngster to forget about other vehicles on the country roads. But there can still be some, Mr. Hetzel said. Youngsters have to learn to be as careful on farm roads as any others.
Farm youngsters also may get assigned chores all year, not only in the summer. Some of these chores can be more dangerous than those in a more urban setting. They can be helping feed the livestock or with planting and field work.
Some chores can be hazardous because of youngsters’ lack of experience and smaller size. “Large animals and large equipment can be dangerous to youngsters until they get more experience,” Mr. Hetzel said.
