The School Board got a taste of the budget Superintendent David Gangel will submit in March at its meeting last Tuesday evening.
With no additional monies expected from the state, indeed with the strong possibility that Rappahannock will get fewer dollars from Richmond, Dr. Gangel said he will ask for a six percent across-theboard salary increase for school system employees.
He will also attempt to make teachers’ salaries more competitive at both ends of the scale. This year Rappahannock ranks 114th out of 134 school systems in its starting salary, 52nd for a teacher with 10 years experience, 88th for a teacher with 20 years of experience, and 104th for a teacher with 30 years of experience.
Also with the new budget, Dr. Gangel said he hopes to begin phasing in a salary scale for bus drivers and to increase the school system’s portion of employees’ health insurance premiums.
Next year’s budget may include returning the library aide to a full time position and hiring a science teacher for the primary grades, Dr. Gangel told the board. It may include money for renovating the earth science lab, or at least for planning the renovation.
