Dr. Gangel said he will also ask for two replacement buses, one with a wheelchair lift. Money for enlarging the parking area for buses at the bus shop will be needed once fourlaning U.S. 211 gets underway this summer, he said. Currently most of the buses are being parked on highway department right-of-way. Dr. Gangel explained the budget will also have to be increased to pay for doing a leak test on the fuel oil underground storage tank at the elementary school and for buying leak insurance.
Next year’s budget will be formally presented to the School Board at a work session March 6.
The School Board formally approved a new six-year plan, that covers only two years, and agreed to move into a“ whole language” reading program as part of that plan.” Whole , language” reading emphasizes learning by reading and writing rather than doing work sheets.
The new six-year plan also calls for increased emphasis on science, particularly in primary grades. Spanish instruction will be increased by adding it in seventh grade next year and at the high school the following year.
