But what remains is perhaps even more subversive because of its roots in the structure of our society. That racial hatred was evidenced last month by the cross-burning in ■ Tiger Valley. Although it was apparently, according to Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke, a prank in the most extremely bad taste, the fact remains that the symbolism inherent in the burning cross remains.
It is that attitude which needs to be addressed now. Overt discrimination by skin color is almost universally recognized as wrong. The overtures by the white minority government toward the black majority in South Africa is one measure of the universal recognition that segregation is not morally acceptable.
However, the underlying stereotypes which fuel segregationist feelings remain — both in South Africa and in the United States. It is that attitude which needs to be addressed — through education, through example, and through a willingness to treat other people, regardless of their skin color, by the Golden Rule.
It requires an open mind, and an open heart. But it is the only attitude worthy of the greatest nation in the Free World. If we are to be a beacon to others, we must lead by example through our own conduct.
That conduct and attitude is not one which is dragged out of the closet and dusted off each February in celebration of B&ck History Month, and then sanctimonously folded away uttfilthe next year. It is one which requires daily effort. It m9st be fostered, not only in our own lives but by our examples toward others.
• Only in that way can the idea of racial equality be realized, and with it the dreams of Martin Luther King Jr. and the others who died in its pursuit. The fulfillment of that dream would truly be a fitting monument to their memory.
